Eaters and Southern Cooking


Great food and good preparations make what people know as southern cooking. Apart from Ireland and Spain, Scotland, America, and England are other countries that southern cuisine can be attributed to. The best examples of southern cooking are Creole, Cajun and Floribbean (Florida and the Caribbean).

For their style of cooking, you can really see how culture plays an important role in southern locations like Delaware, Maryland, Ohio River, and Oklahoma. Aside from squash, corn is another famous ingredient in these parts. There are different styles of cooking that southerners like to engage in and one of them is the deep pit barbecue which was influenced by Native Americans that were part of tribes like the Seminole and Caddo.

When it comes to the south, people do love their flour, milk, and sugar. What you have here is an influence straight from Europe. Because of their love for breakfast, southerners use a lot of these baking ingredients complemented by dairy items like milk and cheese.

Aside from potatoes and peas, greens make up most of a southerner's meal and you better not forget the fried chicken. Here is where cobbler or pie is the conventional dessert option. When it comes to good old American soups like lentil or split pea, these are actually southern style soups.

From green beans to okra, there are tons of veggies that southern folk adore and for their pies, nothing beats pecan and apple. Corn bread and biscuits are preferred by southern folk and they also love basic salads made out of veggies or fruit. Southern folk will not allow anyone to eat on a messy table as having the proper settings make food taste more delicious.

Cornbread is a staple. For southerners, kitchens always have baking bread since the people cannot live without corn bread. If there are no biscuits, corn bread, or rolls, you are not eating a southern meal.

If you plan on making corn bread, you need ingredients like flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt to start you off. Then, egg, milk (buttermilk) and liquid shortening are added. It is okay to mix in some sugar if you like.

Basically, corn bread is made using more than a cup of flour, several eggs, some milk, shortening, and sugar as preferred. Remember to combine all elements for a great dough. Use muffin tins that have been greased when you bake the bread.

All breads in the south are served fresh from the oven. The oven is fired up to see to it that the bread is always hot. Aside from not using plain old flour in their corn bread, southerners also use cornmeal when the dough is placed on the skillet for cooking.
